The Institute for the Physically Handicapped came into existence as an autonomous body in the year 1975, when the Government of India took over the then Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Institute was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 with effect from November 12, 1976 and has been running under the administrative and financial control of Ministry of social welfare Government of India.
The Institute for the Physically Handicapped is managed by the General Council and the Standing Committee comprising of the representatives from the Government of India and experts in the field of rehabilitation, medicine, surgery and allied subjects and lay down the guidelines and the policies for the achievement of aims and objectives of the institute. The President of the General Council is the Secretary of the Ministry of Welfare, Government of India whereas the Joint Secetary in the Handicapped Welfare division is the Chairman of the Standing Committee.

The Institute aims to serve the orthopedically handicapped of all age groups. In its pursuit of alleviating the sufferings of disabled people, the Institute runs the following programmes:

Vocational Rehabilitation of the Orthopedically Handicapped.
